New Artwork {DIY/Repurpose}

I think I have been bitten by the DIY/Repurposing bug!
As I keep going through our old decor and purging items that don't belong anymore, I keep coming across items I think I can make work.

Here is my most recent DIY fever episode, and I must say one of my favorites in awhile!

I had a pair of old frames with an art piece in them. I picked these up from Marshalls a long time ago. Probably when I first moved to Florida.
The black frames just didn't go. They are way dark!

Along the way!

The blue one turned out to be my favorite! I can't wait to hang both of these up around my home.

Mini Repurposing Project

After moving into our new home, many items and decor' pieces just don't fit with the stylistic approach we are taking when it comes to decorating our new house.

I started to think that I could actually re-purpose a few of the items to fit in with our decor'. This way I can save some money and we can allocate the money we would have spent on other items.

We had a piece that we kept in the entryway of our condo for our keys, hats, work passes, and other odds and ends. It was an old wood color that just didn't fit in with the coloring in our new house. You will see what it looked like before the re-purpose in the video here.

After some painting and other transformations, I am really happy to say that I love how it turned out and can't wait to get this up in the mudroom!

Make sure you watch the video to see step by step how I went about this mini project!

How I Stay Organized {The Doggie Stuff}

I have to admit, I find it somewhat embarrassing as a professional organizer when things are just.not.organized. That was the case with my dog Rebel's things.
Yep. This was it. When he was a puppy I had this bag that I used whenever we went somewhere. And I mean whenever. I toted this thing around like he was my child and this was his diaper bag . I had extra toys, puppy wipes, nail trimmers, potty bags, additional grooming supplies, treats, etc. You name it, I had it in there.
As he got older I traveled less and less with this whole bag and eventually only grabbed the necessities when I knew we needed them. After moving I struggled to find a place for this disheveled, bent out of shape bag. I even went so far to shove it in the top of my laundry room cabinets (with all my laundry items mind you).
I needed a change, organizational speaking. I finally sat down to change the system. Thank God I'm a professional! (cough, cough)

We had an old 3-tiered plastic drawer that Joey had saved from his single days and it has always ended up moving with us living in the laundry rooms as we go. No surprise that is where is ended up in our new house! (joy!)
Needless to say, it actually came in handy!
This guy fits perfectly between my washer and dryer; and after cleaning it out I had a plan for Rebel's things!
I really wanted to separate the items I had for Rebel. I hated after pulling out every single grooming supply I had, I would finally come across the potty bags. Or even his leash. That thing would get tangled in zippers, straps, and toys! So I take that back...I didn't want to separate these items, I NEEDED to separate them.
Hence the wonderful vision for the three drawers!
One for outside items.
In this drawer I keep all his potty bags, harness for walks, leash, back up leashes, and his towel to wipe his feet on rainy days. I also made this the first drawer for a reason. It is right below hip height, making it easier to grab the most used items (leash and potty bags) without having to bend down to get to the lower drawers.

The second drawer is grooming.
You guessed it. All his grooming supplies are in here. From shampoo to nail trimmers, it's all here.

The third and final drawer is extra toys.
Rebel is notorious for wanting every toy he has... out all at once. We tried for awhile putting extra toys on top of his create. But once we turned our backs he would be pulling them all down, or whine until I caved.

Having this extra drawer allows me to only keep 3-4 toys out at a time and it also allows me to rotate them more often.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to get a better system down for my doggie stuff. Maybe I didn't want to let go of that little puppy bag. I'm happy I finally got it together and have Rebel's items separated, labeled, and easy to get to.

How do you store your pet's things?

Cheers!

New Year's Resolutions {2014}

Happy New Year!
I realize the start of the new year was about 9 days ago, but I still have a few resolutions that I thought I would share with you all.

I usually try to have about 10 new year resolutions. Not because I don't want anymore or any less, but I don't want to let myself down. Sounds kinda funny I know.

Please share one of your new year resolutions in the comments below!

Statement Chairs! {One Kings Lane: Home Decor' Resource}

What is a chair?
Go ahead, you can answer to yourself right this very moment. It would take you only a couple seconds to define a chair. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online a chair \'cher\: is a seat for one person that has a back and usually four legs. While you probably used a few different words, you most likely thought of this when asked to define it.

However, in today's industries of design and style we find that a chair is not only used so a person can sit on a seat with a back and four legs. Chairs take on a whole new meaning. They become pieces of art, statement decor', pops of color, and a display of our design eye.

I was recently contacted by One King's Lane to help introduce a new Home Decor Resource Guide available on their website.  This guide is literally chair learning heaven. Pick a chair you have seen or own...any chair! The guide gives you  information on chairs from multiple time periods, DIY projects for your chairs, and even an article on the history of chairs.

This is what I did. I was traveling so I actually picked a chair from my mother-in-law's house, but I was with her when she purchased it so that makes up for it. Right?

This is a refinished Spindle-back chair. On One King's Lane I typed in spindle back chair and received several articles. I'm not sure of the type of wood used here, but I'm assuming that it wasn't anything really special or they wouldn't have refinished it.  After doing some searching on the Home Resource Decor Guide this chair has a few different elements that are related to staple chairs from certain periods.

The rounded back with spindles and no arms resembles the Windsor chairs which were known for their spindles and rounded back. However, the thickness of the spindles along with the shape they were carved suggests also some incorporation of  Mission Style. But once again, it is not a chair fully from this period of style because it has no arms. According to the guide, the Mission Style chairs had arms and were a bit more elaborate in design.

Looking around the guide, this chair is probably a more traditional-present time, spindle back chair that was refinished in a more shabby chic finish and pops of bold color. I think that is what I love about the chair. It is not a large statement piece meant to overpower your eye; but moreover a chair with a rustic feel incorporating classic design from multiple eras with bold color into a room.

I had so much fun looking at One King's Lane Home Resource Style Guide and I can't get over all the different styles of chairs and the elements they bring to design. I challenge you to pick out a chair from your home and use this guide to help discover more about your favorite chair.

Have a favorite type of chair? Leave it in the comments below and tell me what you love about having statement chairs in your home!

Cheers!
